GCU Education Students Win Award for Economics Music Video

Lesson learned: Sometimes you have to get creative to get your point across.

That’s what education students at Georgian Court University did when they entered Fayetteville State University’s Economics Music Video Contest, and won $500 for their video.

Theresa Romano (history major), Jeffrey Wallster (history), Angeline Flores (English), and Hannah Levin (English) were in  ED 3120, taught by  GCU Assistant Professor of Education Nancy Sardone, Ed.D., when they turned one of their class assignments into a contest entry.

“The assignment was to research how markets promote peace based on the economic views of Adam Smith and Richard Cobden, who is known as the leader of the free-trade movement,” said Dr. Sardone. The students could to use any song and create new lyrics indicating their understanding of how markets promote peace in a video format.

“Since a contest promoted by Fayetteville State University  in North Carolina was running at the same time, I suggested they enter the contest and upload their YouTube video,” said Dr. Sardone. Their project, Market Got Us Fallin’ in Love, parodied Russian-United States economic stances and was set to the hit song by Usher. Their entry took second place in a field of contestants who found economic inspiration in music by artists like Taylor Swift, Florida-Georgia Line, and Sara Bareillis.
