Science and Spirit Meet at Georgian Court’s ‘Nurturing the Planet’

Speakers Gerry Gavin, Sachiko Komagata and Rich Braconi discussed issues from holistic health and self-healing to angels and the power of positive energy.

Dozens of participants recently turned out at Georgian Court University for “Nurturing the Planet through Energy, Spirituality and Self-Improvement,” a four-hour symposium exploring the connections between science, spirituality and wellness.

“It is a provocative topic,” said Siobahn Hutchinson, owner of Next Step Strategies, LLC, and a graduate of Georgian Court University’s holistic health graduate program, sponsor of the symposium. “With all the uncertainty in today’s world, many people seem to question what they believed to be true,” she said. “There is also a common theme among the event’s speakers that seems to resonate: Everyone has natural gifts.

Presented at the Great Hall of the historic mansion at Georgian Court, the June 16 program featured three speakers, who addressed a sold out audience.

Retired police detective Rich Braconi shared his experience of “seeing” physical ailments in people’s bodies. Mr. Braconi, a self-taught medical intuitive, said that on one occasion it appeared that a friend’s veins were bursting from his leg. After sharing what he “saw,” the friend visited a doctor and was diagnosed with high blood pressure. Today, some five years later, he is regularly consulted for assistance in medical intuition and his abilities have grown to also include spiritual communication.

Participants also heard from Sachiko Komagata, PT, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the GCU Department of  Holistic Health and Exercise Science at GCU. The university offers a graduate degree in holistic health studies and this fall will launch its new 100 percent online master’s program. To date, students from as far away as Utah and Vermont have enrolled in the courses taught by professors based at the Georgian Court campus in Lakewood, N.J.

As part of the symposium, Dr. Komagata discussed the scientific literature surrounding energy and spiritually and shared studies that  validate the healing power of prayer and energy medicine techniques that are now accepted and performed by major medical institutions. Dr. Komagata even discussed the growing body/mind/spirit study of Noetic Science.

Lastly, Gerry Gavin, the author of the recently released Balboa Press/Hay House book, “Messages from Margaret,” spoke about his journey from “skeptic to psychic.”

From his experience of living in a haunted house to how he learned to communicate with the angel Margaret—whom he said he channeled as he wrote the book—Mr. Gavin stressed that everyone has the ability to communicate with angels.

The author performed a live demonstration of how sending love and prayer affects energy, taught the group a quick one minute meditation to balance emotions and left the group with several recommendations for elevating personal energy, which in turn nurtures the planet.

The program was created by Siobhan Hutchinson, who runs Next Step Strategies, LLC (www.nextstepstrategies.com), which helps people understand the body’s natural healing

abilities. She also offers educational and healing programs throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania and promotes public awareness of holistic health programs and providers.

Former New York Stock Exchange President, New Jersey Higher Education Chief,
and Meridian Health Executive Offer Advice to the Class of 2012

Lakewood, N.J., June 1, 2012—Two of the shortest words in the English language carry enormous weight, according to Rich Hader, R.N., Ph.D., senior vice president of nursing for Meridian Health.

“I want you to look in the mirror and say to yourself, ‘I can.’ If you believe you can, you absolutely will achieve whatever you want,” he told members of Georgian Court University’s graduating Class of 2012. Dr. Hader, who helped launch the Georgian Court-Meridian Hospital School of Nursing four years ago, emphasized the power that comes with being confident and prepared to take advantage of life’s opportunities.

Dr. Hader received an honorary Doctor of Health degree and congratulated 30 Georgian Court students who earned their B.S.N. degrees. The group was the first to graduate from the nursing school operated jointly by GCU and Meridian. Overall, GCU awarded 618 degrees—undergraduate and graduate—during its 2012 commencement ceremonies.

The graduates’ plans for using their newly minted degrees run the gamut. For example:

  • Trenton native Chartice Barlow, who graduated with a degree in business and less than $3,000 in college debt, is evaluating M.B.A. programs and wants to pursue a fashion career.
  • English major Andrew Galesetti of Spring Lake Heights is publishing his first book, “To Breathe Free,” a story that traces the struggles of families during the Depression, through World War II, and into modern-day Manhattan.
  • Juliana Estrella will put her psychology degree to work in Matawan. As a behavior assistant at Our Special Place, Juliana will assist in developing behavior support plans, and running social skill groups for children with autism.
  • Kim Rizzolo begins work as a teaching assistant this summer as she enters a doctoral program in chemistry at Boston University this fall.
  • Karen Argese, who completed her M.A. in Administration and Leadership, will pair her 24 years of teaching experience and the skills acquired in her master’s program (her second at GCU) to pursue a post outside the classroom.

‘Do what you love’

New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education Rochelle R. Hendricks received an Honorary Doctor of Educational Administration degree before she addressed the 382 students earning bachelor’s degrees. Among them was Karissa Merkel, a Freehold native who graduated with a degree in English and was selected to address the senior class.

“As we begin our new journey, always remember one thing,” she told her classmates. “Passion is the fuel that ignites the fire within your soul. Do what you love, and love what you do, because it is passion that gives you the will and the strength to accomplish your heart’s most favorable desires.”

The Class of 2012 faces better job prospects than their peers in the last few years, but there will still be rough patches ahead, Karissa warned.

“It is the journey that shapes us into who we are,” she offered. “We have the ability to create our own life story, and each story is unique, making it possible for each of us to become the change in the world that we hope to see.”

Drive and passion fuel success

Veronica Harmsen, of Beachwood, N.J., graduated with a Master of Arts in Education–Autism Spectrum Studies and shared her personal journey with her graduate school colleagues.

When her brother Xavier was diagnosed with autism 15 years ago, Veronica pledged to do all she could to make a difference in the lives of youngsters struggling with the disability. She earned an education degree from GCU in 2008 and soon returned to pursue her master’s degree.

“I knew I wanted to embark on a career in special education,” Veronica said, “but I often wondered . . . Would this even make a difference? Or am I just piling on more money to my loans? However, I found Georgian Court University’s autism program to be an atmosphere that inspires academic excellence. The School of Education saw my drive and passion to teach special education,” she said.

“I thank God every day for giving me the gift of teaching,” she continued. “Not only am I educating these students, I am also learning more each day to share with my brother. True success is not the education that you have, but it’s what you do with this education.”

Those earning advanced degrees also heard from William R. Johnston, former president of the New York Stock Exchange, and from local entrepreneur Betsy Schmalz Ferguson, CEO of American Flavors and Fragrances. Both received honorary doctorates from GCU.

“Find a job that you can be passionate about,” Mr. Johnston advised. “It probably won’t be your first or even your second. But every day should be, and will be, a pleasure to go to work.” He also encouraged students to build a solid network of friends, faculty, and colleagues, and to always remember their alma mater.

“When you get that first big payday, carve out a piece for those who helped you along the way,” he said. “Don’t forget about Georgian Court.”

Founded in 1908 and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Georgian Court University is a comprehensive university with a strong liberal arts core and a special concern for women. A forward-thinking university that supports diversity and academic excellence, Georgian Court serves more than 2,500 students of all faiths and backgrounds in both undergraduate and graduate programs. Georgian Court’s main campus is located at 900 Lakewood Avenue, Lakewood, N.J., on the picturesque former George Jay Gould estate, now named a National Historic Landmark. Georgian Court also offers classes at One Woodbridge Center in Woodbridge and at the New Jersey Coastal Communiversity in Wall.

Wellness Experts Discuss Healing, Holistic Health and More at Georgian Court

Gerry Gavin

Gerry Gavin, author of "Messages from Margaret," joins medical intuitive Rich Braconi at GCU on June 16.

Improving our own well-being and making the world a better place go hand in hand, according to organizers of “Nurturing the Planet Through Energy, Spirituality and Self-Improvement,” slated for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16 at Georgian Court University.

Sponsored by the GCU Department of Holistic Health and Exercise Science, the event is open to the public and reservations are encouraged. Admission is $10 per person and lunch is included.

Guest speakers include Gerry Gavin, the author of the recently released Balboa Press/Hay House book, “Messages from Margaret.” Mr. Gavin will offer very practical and “down to earth” ways that anyone can change destructive thought patterns, elevate their personal energy and aid in healing of the planet by just improving themselves.

Also speaking is Rich Braconi, a medical intuitive who will share his personal experiences and deep understanding of how he has grown his ability to sense ailments, disease and health imbalances in other people. Both Mr. Gavin and Mr. Braconi discovered their abilities later in life and often speak to audiences in hopes of teaching them how they can do the same.

In addition to the special guest presentations, participants will also hear from Sachiko Komagata, P.T, Ph.D., Chair and Associate Professor in Holistic Health Studies at Georgian Court University. Dr. Komagata will provide an overview of the scientific literature surrounding energy and spirituality that are closely related to Gerry and Rich’s areas of practice.

The event, which will be will be hosted in GCU’s historic Mansion on the university’s Lakewood campus, is expected to sell out quickly. To reserve seating, or for more information, contact Dr. Komagata at 732.987.2663.

About Holistic Health at GCU
Georgian Court University is the only regionally accredited university in New Jersey that offers a master’s degree in holistic health studies. Eastern and Western approaches are integrated to create well-balanced courses that teach students to communicate and educate others about health and wellness. While the program offers a variety of courses taught in the classroom and online, GCU will soon launch a master’s degree that is delivered 100% online.

GCU’s McAuley Institute Begins New Year with “Cook, Eat and Heal”

Cook, Eat and Heal---GCU MILL CourseLakewood, N.J., Dec. 30, 2011—It’s that time of year again when Americans resolve to do better, to eat better, and to be better. Registered nurse Marion Marchese of Manalapan-based Health Her Way, LLC, is determined to help people do a better job of sticking to their intentions.

An expert in nutrition and healthy living, Ms. Marchese is the instructor for “Cook, Eat and Heal,” a three-week course that begins Tuesday, Jan. 17 at Georgian Court University. The 1 p.m.-3 p.m. class, which also meets Jan. 24 and Jan. 31, is one of many offerings from GCU’s McAuley Institute for Lifelong Learning (MILL), a collection of programs, college-level classes, social activities and special events for adults 50 and older.

“Cook, Eat and Heal” participants will learn how to shop, read labels and use portion control as they prepare healthy meals. Also, Ms. Marchese will explore the systemic effects of proper nutrition and the direct effect that eating has on everything from coronary disease to cholesterol. She’ll also offer insight on foods that can boost energy levels and affect one’s mood.

Now in its second year, Georgian Court’s MILL program has grown from a few dozen participants in 2009 to about 500 members. At the same time, the course load for MILL has expanded from two pilot classes to upward of 40 offerings planned for 2012.

Registration for “Cook, Eat and Heal” is $50 per person, and enrollment is open only to paid MILL members. An annual $25 fee allows participants to become members of the McAuley Institute, which offers enriching and challenging classes without the hassles of homework, tests, or course credits. MILL members also attend social networking events and invitation-only activities with headline guests who appear at GCU throughout the year.

Sponsors for the 2011–2012 MILL lineup include The Sambol Family Foundation in Memory of Dr. Daniel Gold; Novy & Associates, Counsellors at Law; Creative Financial Group of New Jersey; and Harrogate. Learn more about the McAuley Institute for Lifelong Learning by contacting GCU’s Office of Conferences and Special Events at 732.987.2263 or specialevents@georgian.edu. Registration forms and detailed course listings are also available at www.georgian.edu/mcauley.
