Warming their welcome—Georgian Court Collects Coats for New Immigrants

MercyFirst

Georgian Court University faculty, students and staff set out to lend a warm welcome to some of our country’s newest—and most controversial—immigrants this season. During Critical Concerns Week and throughout November, GCU collected winter items for MercyFirst in Syosset, NY.

10383487_10154827194525214_3677203294793569527_nLike Georgian Court, MercyFirst is sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. The non-profit needs hats, scarves and warm coats for unaccompanied immigrant children who are sent to their shelter after being processed at the U.S.-Mexico border. Often, children who cross the U.S. border arrive with only the clothes they are wearing, and are not prepared for an East Coast winter.

image005The GCU community was generous, and contributed more than 200 lbs. of clothing (and nearly 300 items), including:

17 Coats
31  Hoodies/Sweaters
25 Long-sleeve t-shirts
69 Hats
55 Scarves
92 pairs of mittens and gloves

sisterselfie

After 14 years at the helm of Georgian Court University, President Rosemary E. Jeffries ’72, RSM, Ph.D., is stepping down in June 2015. She takes a walk down memory lane in the 2014 Fall/Winter Edition of GCU Magazine, but we still had more questions!

5 Questions with Sister Rosemary

GCU Magazine: Looking back, what advice would you give to the Sister Rosemary of 2001?

SRJ: Be clear about the priorities of your own life and make space for them. I have a commitment to a religious community and my own spiritual journey. The days, weeks, and months can get busy, and you may defer what’s important to you. Don’t. You have to…
